Meet Sophie!
I adopted Sophie just about 2 and a half years ago, in the
fall of 2005. Luckily, she had almost no traits of an abused animal; she was
afraid of no one, eager to give and receive attention, and well-trained,
although NOT on a leash. But she had an incredible amount of high-strung,
nervous energy and would pace and pace around the house, up and down the stairs
every day, even though she got a great deal of exercise. Now, more than 2 years
later, she has calmed down so much it is amazing. She is extremely good with
children, and after much practice on a yoked leash with a choke chain, attached
to our other dog, she is now great on the leash, no choke chain required, just
walks along calmly, stops on command, sits, stays, etc. Her capacity and
enthusiasm for learning and performing is endless. She always has a blanket of
her own, that she sucks on and tears at when she's bored or getting ready for
bed, but never chews on or destroys anything else. Best of all, she and our
other dog, a much-older mixed breed, are the best of friends. They play
together, walk on the leash together, lie next to each other on matching beds,
and steal bones from each other over and over. She is such a good, well-behaved,
loving dog, and a great addition to our family, even though it was tough going
at first. She has come a long way, and we cannot imagine life without her! Thank
you for all the work you do on the behalf of all the dogs you take in and help.
