Meet Lance!

Story from ‘Lance’ (whose new name is ‘Kiran’):

In July, 2005, my foster mom, Ellen, rescued me from the Durham APS.

Before that, I had bounced around from home to home. In my first home after I left my momma, the fellow thought I got too big. And then in the second home, they didn't like me chasing their cats - what else was I supposed to do! I am a dog! But thank goodness, Ellen came and rescued me. Just a couple of days after going to Ellen's house, I met my new family. They have the cutest daughter, Jessie. She loves to play with me. And my new mom and dad take me on lots of walks, play with me at the beach, and snuggle with me on the couch. They call me their lap dog! But I worried a lot when I first went to their home because I didn't know if they would like me and I'd get to stay.

When I went to my new home, I met my new family's other dog, Maggie. She is a Malamute/Shepherd mix that my mom rescued from the Raleigh shelter when Maggie was 1 year old. She is now 13 and such a grouch! When I first met her, she didn't like me at all. She has nerve degeneration of the rear legs so she couldn't play with me.....but I really wanted to play with her! At first, she didn't want me anywhere near her. But now, she tries to play a little bit - pretty good for an old lady! And when I want to go out, she likes to follow me. She even mopes some when I go to play at my new friend Nancy's kennel (Hook's K9 Training). She won't even eat when I am not around! I think she likes me now.

I get to go visit my Aunt Ellen sometimes. She has a really big yard and lots of cute lady dogs that I can play with. I love playing and running around!

Last fall, my mom and dad took me to training with Nancy. It helped me a lot with getting secure in my new home. And I learned to heel, which helped my mom go on long walks with me. She walks fast but not as fast as I can run! Sometimes Jessie comes along on her scooter for the walk. We went to the beach once but I decided I definitely did NOT like the water. A wave came up on me and swamped me under, so I stay in the shallows now. But I DO like the crabs. They are really fun to chase, especially at night. One time I caught one and it bit me on the nose!

My dad says I am a good guard dog now because no one has stolen the couch yet! I don't understand that....I just like to lay on it a lot. I think I finally figured out that this is my home and I don't need to worry anymore. I can lie down and relax and take a nap when I want and I know that when I wake up, I will still be with my family. Thanks to my Aunt Ellen, I ended up in a really good home. Now if I can just get Maggie to play more!
